This blog post is a little late, but by way of update, Ted Fellow, Darius Weems, the DGW crew, and myself celebrated the fifth annual Darius Goes West Day in late July.
This quote is from the DGW blog:
"On this day, four years ago, Mayor Heidi Davison declared July 22nd Darius Goes West Day in Athens. It was the first day of the trip that would become an award-winning movie that would change many lives. DGW Day gives us a chance to reflect on all the hard work people have done for Darius’s cause of ending DMD."
An example of one of these hard working supporters is Kristin Daily, to my right in this picture. Kristin hosted the first screening of this year's 100,000+ mile road trip (a follow up to our our original road trip) in her hometown of Cleveland, OH. She is one of many who traveled hundreds of miles to Athens, Ga for the festivities and she has single handedly raised tens of thousands of dollars for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research.
The event included a carnival (Left: Daniel Epting/Driver, Right: Jason Hees/Sound)...
...local bands....
...a screening of the original film...
...and an exhibition of never before seen footage as well as supporter made videos from our travels, like this AMAZING video made by the film club at Garrison Forrest Girls School (If you watch, make sure you watch past the thirty second mark--hilarious!).
Hip Hop being Darius' favorite king of music, the two day celebration concluded with Grammy award winning rap artists, The Nappy Roots, as well as two other phenomenal rap acts--Pastor Troy and Killer Mike.
For their last song, Fishscales, a member of the Nappy Roots called Darius to the stage for an impromptu performance. The place went nuts!
I want to quickly thank all the TED Fellows who have checked up from time to time on Darius's health. You will be happy to hear that a doctor we saw last week found an improvement in all of the symptoms that gave us a scare last spring.
With that said, please know that you are all welcome to crash on mine or Darius's couch for next year's Darius Goes West Day festivities!
